How Safe is Efoiling?

Efoiling is generally safe when proper precautions are taken. During lessons, all participants are required to wear a lifejacket and helmet, take a safety briefing, and have an instructor in a boat alongside them. You’ll learn how to properly fall into the water, release the throttle, and swim back to the board. The efoil also has safety features like automatic motor shutoff when the controller is released or submerged. Conquering the efoil is considered the safest way to learn hydrofoiling.

Is the Board Stable?

Yes, the efoil board is quite stable. Its weight and large surface area provide a very stable platform to stand on while learning. Using a large low-aspect wing also increases stability, especially at slower speeds. This helps slow down responsiveness compared to traditional foils, making it easier to develop muscle memory.

What is a Low Aspect Wing?

A low aspect ratio wing is shorter and wider, providing more lift but also more drag. Low aspect wings are great for learning as they are more stable and allow slower speeds. This means you can attain flight at a comfortable, controlled speed that mitigates crashes when starting out.

What is a Controller?

The controller is a handheld wireless throttle that allows the rider to control the efoil’s speed. Being able to set a steady “cruise control” speed makes the board even more stable. Having this ability to adjust the speed provides riders a greater sense of control and comfort while learning.

Are There Age or Weight Requirements to Efoil?

Most efoil companies recommend a minimum age of 16, and some require adult supervision for under 18. There are also typical weight limits around 100-275 lbs depending on the board size. Younger kids under 11 may struggle unless they have good balance sport experience. For lessons with younger children, a parent should be present.

Is It Difficult to Learn?

Efoiling has a learning curve like any board sport, but the motor assistance and stability make it more accessible for beginners than traditional surfing or hydrofoiling. Most people can learn to efoil confidently in 1-2 hours of instruction.

How Long Does the Battery Last?

The battery life depends on the rider’s weight and wing size used. For an average adult around 180 lbs using a large low aspect wing, the battery typically lasts around 1.5 hours of riding per charge.

What Are the Stages of Learning to Efoil?

The typical incremental lesson plan progresses through:
Board balance and falling safely
Riding on stomach
Riding on knees
Standing with hands on board (table top)
Standing hands-free in water
Getting short flights
Sustained flight and turning
Each step builds confidence before advancing.

Does the Controller Float?

Yes, the wireless handheld controller is designed to float if dropped in the water. It also has a strap to keep it secured to your hand.

Is an Efoil Waterproof?

Yes, the efoil components like the motor and battery are fully sealed and waterproof, allowing them to be submerged while still functioning properly. The boards have been tested and proven to be extremely durable in the marine environment.

Can I Rent an Efoil?

Many efoil schools and rental operators offer efoil rentals, often combined with lessons for first-time riders. Ocean Fly does not rent efoils directly. They only offer supervised riding and lessons with instruction on setup, safety protocols, riding techniques and more.

What If I Want to Buy an Efoil?

Purchasing an efoil is a significant investment, with quality models starting around $12,000. It’s advisable to get instruction on proper setup, operation and maintenance. Ocean Fly can help as a vendor, providing guidance on selecting the right size board, assembly tips, and troubleshooting assistance rather than having to figure it all out alone. Contact us first before making a purchase. Ocean Fly are authorized representatives for Lift foils.

What Safety Equipment Do You Wear During an Efoil Lesson?

For efoil lessons, a life jacket and helmet are provided and required to be worn. A wetsuit or rash guard can also be helpful as an extra layer of protection, though it’s not always necessary in warm waters. An instructor boat accompanies lessons for coaching and a resting platform.

How Fast Does an Efoil Go?

Most efoils can reach speeds up to 25-28 mph, with some high-performance models capable of 35 mph or more.

How Much Water Do You Need to Operate an Efoil?

It’s best to have over 5 feet of water depth to operate an efoil safely.

What Should I Bring for My Efoil Lesson?

For your lesson, you’ll want to bring: water, a snack, sunscreen, a towel, and appropriate waterwear like a swimsuit/wetsuit if you have it (let them know if you need to borrow one). Also bring a bag to store your valuables.

How Long Does It Take to Charge the Efoil Battery?

A typical efoil battery takes around 2 hours to fully recharge after use.
